Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is coming to Gwinnett County and will build a $100 million data center near Suwanee in 2012, giving a vote of confidence to Georgia’s Innovation Crescent region for other companies scouting data center sites. Partnership Gwinnett and Gwinnett Chamber Vice President Nick Masino announced the news of AMD’s selection of Gwinnett. The Innovation Crescent Region has become one of the hottest markets in the U.S. for data centers.
“AMD is a household name in the technology industry and their choice to locate and expand here brings significant credibility to the community for being a pro-business environment,” said Nicole Wright, technology business development director at the Chamber.
Headquartered in Sunnyvale, California – aka Silicon Valley – AMD has operations throughout North America and worldwide. A recent article in Atlanta Business Chronicle indicated the company is expected to invest $250 million in the new data center here in the coming years.
Advanced Micro Devices, an Intel competitor, is a semiconductor design innovator leading the next era of vivid digital experiences. The company’s graphics and computing technologies power a variety of devices including PCs, game consoles and the powerful computers that drive the Internet and businesses.
In addition to tax incentives and available real estate, inexpensive power played a big part in AMD’s decision to come to Gwinnett.
“We are very proud to have been a part of helping AMD choose to locate to Gwinnett County. Our reliability and service record is equally important to data center facilities, said Randall Pugh, president and CEO of Jackson EMC.
The Chamber, who partnered with the Georgia Department of Economic Development and Jackson EMC on the project, made the announcement about AMD indicated details surrounding the size and scope of the project would follow.“High capital investment projects like data centers bring better balance to Gwinnett’s tax base, reducing the burden on our 800,000-plus residents. It is a great win for the County and AMD, we welcome them to the community,” said Shirley Lasseter, vice chair of Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners.
AMD’s new data center will join E*Trade, Google and IBM data centers already located in the Atlanta metro area.
